CHILDREN AT RISK’s 2012 Greater Dallas High School Rankings are based on the evaluation of 191 public high schools in the nine counties of North Texas (Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Rockwall, and Tarrant counties). Researchers based their methodology on 16 measures of performance to evaluate how well North Texas public schools are preparing students for post-secondary success. Key measures included the graduation rate, participation in advanced coursework, performance on college entrance exams, and gains on math and reading/ELA TAKS exams.

This list represents area high schools that showed the greatest improvement across both reading and math TAKS scores for students who took TAKS exams at the same campus in both 2010 and 2011. Campuses with missing gains data points are excluded. CHILDREN AT RISK added together each campus’ reading and math TAKS gains to create a total gains score. The campuses with the largest positive total gains were recognized as the most improved. To qualify, a campus has to have a student body that is at least 50% economically disadvantaged. Campuses that fall into Tier 4 of Texas schools were excluded from the list.

In addition, CHILDREN AT RISK researched and ranked 328 middle schools and 996 elementary schools in the Dallas metropolitan area. The top five schools for these categories are listed below.
